Just Another Day in AnyTown, USA

Just Another Day in AnyTown, USA

by Shelley Bluejay Pierce

There is an irreverent sense of newness to the passing days now…as if that giant, cataclysmic “shoe falling from the sky” is not only on a collision course but is going to be a direct hit on all of society and what we humans have conjured up as reality. For, in fact, there is no reality in our ‘reality.’ Many years and repetitions beyond count have brought me to this place of learned helplessness, aided considerably by the propaganda-spewing-media, political lost causes and the countless talking-heads without brains.

I have felt all along that the only way there would be a solution to the disaster called ‘civilization’ that we have created is for it all to be wiped off the planet. Yes, all of it! There can be no shred of evidence left in the wake of this clean sweep for if the tiniest particle of the humanity we refer to as ‘progress’ remains? We will grab hold of it like an infant digging for a wet nurse and give in to our lusts once again. We repeat the repetitions and like worn out vinyl records, find the built-in grooves that allow us to skim the surface and slide by….not growing….not changing for the better….just happy to stay in our warm pile of shit because it is warm and offers nothing else.

So many of the articles I have written in the past reveal my feelings of impending doom for our society in general. I feel as though very few readers have gleaned much from my rantings or perhaps I am like one of the talking-heads they have heard as background noise amidst the onslaught of techno-information-overload and they have quite simply learned to tune me out. Warnings about the cancerous deception-growths within our political leadership have been largely ignored. My finger pointing at redundant environmental and social awareness non-profits that have been proliferating like rabbits mating unchecked in our own back yards are, as well, ignored. I am not the only voice that has been screaming about these issues, albeit my screaming was indeed done from the wilderness, quite literally.

And so here we are….today…this day or the next makes no matter because they all look alike and have no unique characteristics to grandstand any other day. Our health care is the butt of jokes worldwide and just how poorly cared for the ‘richest Nation in the world’ is has reached the epitome of designation of a third-world country. We are the most entertained humans on the planet and yet, our country is most surely the least informed about its own leadership and systems that govern all within its ivory towers….which are decaying into dust before our very eyes due to the lack of maintenance performed on a heavily used infrastructure. But, Americans blink back a few tears as they watch their television sets, eating their voluminous dinners, and feeling a nanosecond worth of empathy for those killed in the most recent, preventable bridge collapse.

We, the People, supposedly and blindly governed by people that “We the People” voted into political office to do as we want them to do, are clueless as to what the electorate is truly doing on a daily basis. Billions of hard earned taxpayer dollars are sent to other countries under the auspices of promoting democracy and aiding in the civilization processes of those deemed lees-than we Americans though few Americans can recount the names of even those countries having received our foreign aid. Meanwhile at home, in our own country, we have people dying of preventable diseases, living on the streets with no homes because even the richest of the middle class can no longer afford their own residence, and seeing enormous cities crumble into dust thanks to importing all our goods from other countries rather than building and selling our own goods. We can afford to care for every other country on the planet, it seems, but not our own home turf.

As the dawn breaks and the sun rises once more, there has been little change from yesterday, last week or last year. We are still in complete denial of the uncivilized nature of this created Utopian civilization we call reality and begin the daily grind once again so that the pockets of the rich are filled and the spending frenzy of those in control of the purse strings runs amok. We read the headlines of more wars, financial ruination, environmental contamination and we sigh…drink our Starbucks coffee and move on with our day as if nothing in the outside world has anything to do with our selfish, inner world. We somehow find comfort in blaming the sick and dying for not contributing more to the financial stability of this giant, super-sized-happy-meal of a country and fail to see that it is our own environmental irresponsibility that is killing off our own work force. We quickly blame our young people for their laziness and lack of motivation for our sad ranking amongst other highly educated nations. Far easier to do that finger-pointing than to hold accountable a sick system that educates at the cost of an entire lifetimes’ worth of debt and wonder why we are not competing in the global economy.

So drink up America! Eat, drink and be merry! Survive and thrive in this junkyard we call home and when it all comes crashing down around our feet, which it will and has already been doing? There will be no mass rush on the purchase of social conscience and awareness at the Black Friday sales. No, far from that will happen when reality comes face to face with the real reality. We have been so thoroughly indoctrinated to find someone else to blame and somewhere else to place the fault that we will avoid any personal guilt whatsoever. Until this civilization can support us no more, the tit has dried up and produces no more fat-laden milk for us to guzzle down will we have the slightest pangs of awareness hit us between the eyes.

“Chevron Pulls Greatest Magic Trick Ever!"

Editorial by Shelley Bluejay Pierce

January 31, 2011

In what may prove to be one of the most bizarre legal moves ever, lawyers for the oil giant, Chevron, asked an Ecuadorian court to dismiss a multi-billion dollar lawsuit on the grounds that the plaintiffs don’t actually exist. Just who is it that Chevron’s legal team wants to make ‘disappear’ like some rabbit from a top hat? Indigenous tribal members from Ecuador, that’s who.

I originally covered this storyline for the news outlet, “Native American Times” in July of 2007 and I was appalled then at the horrors being faced by these ‘invisible’ plaintiffs. To read this past week that this case is still unresolved and that the people in this region continue to live without clean water or access and payment for medical care made my blood boil. Now they are told that they ‘don’t exist!’

The case against Chevron has been on trial since 2003 and now, nearing a final judgment that could see damages of $113 billion levied against them, the legal-beagles are howling and snapping at any opportunity to rescue the oil giant.

From 1964 to 1990, Texaco, which was later bought out by Chevron, operated massive oil drilling operations in the remote Amazon rainforest regions of Ecuador. Between 1971 and 1992, more than 1.5 billion barrels of oil was extracted from this area. Chevron has been unable to make Texaco’s toxic mess disappear through magic or other means and may now be left holding the bag for a disaster of epic proportions.

How big is the disaster you ask?

Some experts consider this to be the worst oil-related disaster in history with toxic waste covering a region the size of Rhode Island. Billions of gallons of toxic waste were dumped into the rainforest area. Cancer rates, the highest in the region where Texaco operated its drilling operations, are blamed for hundreds of lives lost and contributing to the complete extinction of one indigenous group and the endangerment of two others.

Now, Chevron’s legal team has resorted to magic tricks beyond any scope of the imagination by stating that the lawsuit should be dismissed because the plaintiffs don’t really exist.

Really?

Well, maybe that is because you killed off a bunch of them! I mean, one tribe is now completely extinct so I am quite sure that you could manage to say that they don’t exist but what about the remaining plaintiffs? If Chevrons’ lawyers have their way, the delays and magic tricks may delay the final judgment long enough for the rest of the plaintiffs to die off too

Early scientific reports revealed that some water samples from this region contained toxic chemical levels thousands of times higher than permitted by Ecuadorian and U.S. environmental laws. Chemical agents like benzene, toluene and xylene are just some of the more glamorous waste by-products from petroleum operations and are known cancer causing agents.

Gee, I always like to have a little benzene in my morning coffee don’t you?

Ah yes, the fresh taste of a xylene cocktail after a long days work is quite refreshing indeed!

The list of plaintiffs that Chevron-the-Magician wants vanished before your eyes includes five indigenous groups- the Quechua, Siona, Cofan, Secoya and Huaorani. Approximately 80 communities allege that Texaco dumped more than 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into Ecuador’s rainforest during its operations. Documented cases of cancer, skin disease, reproductive abnormalities, and nerve damage are just a few of the benefits from drinking your morning chemical-cocktail if you live near these types of dump sites.

YUMMY! Pour me another glass of that for sure!

This case is hardly rare. Sadly, it seems most of modern society dabbles in such magic-self-deception. Like an ostrich surrounded by a pack of snarling dogs waiting to devour it whole, entire societies blindly believe that all is well in the world because their heads are buried deeply in sand.

Perhaps a cup of benzene would cure that.

We believe that all is well in the world and that our water, air and food supplies are safe because we want to believe it. We hold onto some warm and fuzzy commercial marketing ploy following such things as the BP Oil spill with hope and endearment to these mega-monster-corporations because we have been trained to for decades. All the while the deception continues and we lap it up like kittens for a bowl of warm milk.

The very real plaintiffs in the Ecuador case are still living with poisoned water and land this long after the realities of their plight became public. The old ‘out of sight, out of mind’ magic trick is still alive and well it seems. Until, that is, this scenario plays out in your own back yard.

According to an LA Times financial article, Chevron posted a net income of $5.4 billion for the second quarter of 2010.

I wonder how much of that will be left after their attorney fees? Enough to send a few cases of designer-label bottled waters over to Ecuador?

No, probably not.

I hear that the cost for magicians that can make entire Indigenous tribes ‘disappear’ runs quite high these days.
